What happened this week?

This week in pictures…

On Monday, all staff learnt about the new funding regarding Disability Inclusion. We discussed different disabilities, like vision, hearing and anxiety through activities that took us out of our comfort zone, as you can see from the photos.

Healthy Harrold visited our school this past week and all students learned about various things that can impact our body, such as vaping or positive impacts like healthy friendships.

Projects…

Students have been learning about the Olympics in many learning areas this term, in Art by making dioramas and in Library by researching information for their projects.

The 5/6s have been researching about space as well.

Another important incursion was Courage to Care, which our grade 5/6 students had the chance to attend.

This is a fantastic free program presented by Philip Graves, a born and bred Heyfield local accompanied this year by custodian Anthony Weldon who told the story of his wife’s family, during the Second World War. They are both volunteers and we are very thankful they took the time to visit our school.

Students learned about the importance of being an upstander, through stories from the Holocaust, and related it to scenarios in the classroom. They discussed racism, discrimination, bullying and prejudice with the lens of perpetrator and victims, but also bystanders. These young minds reflected on the impact of bystanders and what type of actions can help becoming upstanders. Students were able to explain how this related to the school values of Respect Aspire Resilience and Engagement, to the ‘3 gates: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?’, and to the school pledge designed by student leaders. This is a conversation that will continue in classrooms during social skill lessons and every day, so we can all become upstanders for what is right and ethical.
